Mines Closes Out Augustana, Road Trip in Straight Sets
NAMPA, Idaho – It took the Colorado School of Mines Volleyball team less than 90 minutes to dismantle Augustana in straight sets on Saturday as the Orediggers closed out their trip to the Northwest Nazarene Tournament.
Contributions came from everywhere for Mines. Hannah Kinnison got it done on offense and defense, turning in a 12-kill, 10-dig double-double while adding two aces. On offense, Kate Kudlac and Morgan McChesney combined for 17 kills with McChesney hitting .316. Additionally, Taylor Helms converted six kills at a .455 clip and Jenna McLaughlin committed zero attack errors. On defense, Jada Price produced 13 digs and Avery Perreira had 10. McChesney, Kudlac, and McLaughlin walked away with three blocks apiece. Starting setter Brinleigh Davis finished her day touting 35 assists, eight digs, two blocks, and one kill.
The Orediggers (3-5) put together a .294 hitting percentage in the victory. They used six blocks as a team to limit Augustana (4-4) to .182 on the attack. Mines also had 55 digs compared to 49 by the Vikings. The Orediggers excelled in service as well, producing five service aces, just two errors in serve receive and only three service errors overall. Augie didn't help itself with seven service errors. The 3-0 win marked Mines' first sweep of the 2024 season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saturday morning into early afternoon in Nampa, Idaho was all Orediggers. They led the first and second sets from beginning to end, and only trailed once in the third set. Five kills from Kinnison and one service ace apiece from Kinnison, Price, and Perreira drove Mines to a 25-20 win in the first frame. Game two saw McLaughlin explode for four kills on .444 hitting while Davis dished out 15 assists and Perreira ground out six digs. The result was a 25-17 margin and a 2-0 lead in the match. Five ties and one lead change in the third set illustrated a closer contest than what actually transpired. Kinnison, Davis, and Price combined for 15 digs, McChesney hammered down four kills, and the Orediggers had five blocks as team while closing out a 25-20 victory to clinch the match.
NOTABLES
- Mines evened the all-time series with Augustana at 2-2. It was the Orediggers first win over the Vikings since 2010.
- Kinnison now boasts double-doubles in four straight matches, and surpassed 100 digs as an Oredigger.
- In addition to her nine kills and three blocks, Kudlac also had a career-high five digs against Augustana.
- Mines needed just nine individuals to earn the win on Saturday.
- Head Coach Jamie Magalei is now 357-127 in her 17th season at the helm.
