- DescriptionThe Pathways Explorations Series features large-scale, TED-style talks where motivating and inspiring speakers tell their personal, academic and professional stories to our Mines campus community. The talks are required for CSM 101 students to learn about the many possible academic and career pathways available to them. The talks are open to all Mines students, faculty and staff, and will be live-streamed and recorded.

The “Launching Your Academic Career” faculty workshops start again this August. Workshops are offered every other Monday from 12-1:30 in Berthoud 106 (content from 12-1, extended time for discussion, as suggested by past participants, is from 1-1:30). Workshops are open to any early-career faculty member on the tenure-, teaching- or research lines as well as postdocs and senior faculty coming from industry or other non-academic spaces to Mines. Come to whichever meetings are of interest, arrive late or leave early, and attend even if you have attended the same workshop(s) in the past! Lunch will be provided, and each week is somewhat independent such that folks can attend as they are able. Topics: Workshop 1 (August 28, 12-1:30): Expectations for Promotion and/or Tenure: Publishing Your Research Workshop 2 (Sept 11, 12-1:30): Setting Up Your Research Group & Developing Its Brand Workshop 3 (Sept 25, 12-1:30): Grant Writing Tips and University Finances for Faculty Workshop 4 (Oct 9, 12-1:30): The Sustainable Professor (Mental Hygiene and Selecting Meaningful Service and Leadership Opportunities) Workshop 5 (Oct 23, 12-1:30): Networking, Finding Mentors, and Managing Personalities Workshop 6 (Nov 6, 12-1:30): Working on Your Dossier (Start Now!) - Oct 158:30 AMDEIA DayThe DEIA Day will include important updates by Dr. Kate Youmans for the priorities and direction of DEIA at Mines and two facilitated sessions by DEIA experts at Justice Leaders Collaborative, featuring Greg Myers (he/him) and Lois McCullen Parr (she/her). The day-long event will include complimentary breakfast and lunch for all participants. This day of learning is specifically tailored to engage faculty and staff at all levels of their DEIA journeys. The expert-facilitated sessions will start with community-building activities before launching into the fundamentals of DEIA, such as the role of social identities and discussions around privilege and oppression, to build a common language and knowledge-based for participants. The second facilitated session will dive deeper into these concepts and actively engage participants in how to apply their DEIA knowledge and skills to their work at Mines. Attendance is by invitation-only and is on a “first-come-first-served” basis. General Council members: Please send only one representative from your unit to attend.

This includes recent bills from the 2022, 2023, and 2024 legislative sessions as well as a preview of legislation being considered for the 2025 session, RTOs and the grid, and the overall transition to a clean energy system. Senator Chris Hansen represents central and east Denver in the Colorado State Senate. He specializes in energy sector economics and data analytics, with 25 years of experience in the global energy industry. Prior to his work as an elected official, he was Senior Director at IHS Markit (now S&P) where he led a global portfolio of energy products, events and partnerships and a Research Fellow at the Oxford Institute for Energy Studies, where he analyzed electricity and gas sector reform in India. Dr. Hansen holds a BSc in Nuclear Engineering from Kansas State University; a Graduate Diploma of Civil Engineering from the University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa; a Master of Science in Engineering Systems from MIT; and a PhD in Economic Geography from Oxford University.
